September 2023 Newsletter
On Saturday, September 23rd from 10:15am to 10:30am an impressive parade of motorcycles will be completing an organized tour here at LaPointe-Fisher. If they aren’t seen, they will certainly be heard. We are fortunate for this experience, co-ordinated by one of our family members, Mr. Tom Williams. Now with the assistance of avid motorcyclists from the Canadian Motorcycle Cruisers, Social Riding club, he has expanded it into CMC -1st Annual – Ride for Dementia in support of the Alzheimer Society of Ontario; showing support for those with dementia, their families, the Long-Term Care Facilities, and care providers. Kudos to Tom for initiating this fantastic fundraising event. Please see brochures in our home for more information and how to donate.
Another family member that has fundraising on her mind is our President of the Family Council Lisa Sharp. Please see this note from her:
Come One, Come All
Come to Family Council. Help to plan the Christmas Bazaar
Do you craft? Do you know someone who does? We need your input.

The reports from the Leadership Team:
Administrator Dahlia- Fall is in the Air! Hope you all had a wonderful summer!
As a follow up to last month’s newsletter, our Home has hired, Jennifer Holmes as the new Environment Services/Assistant Activity Manager and she will be starting this role on September 11, 2023. Please welcome Jennifer to our Team! She brings a wealth of experience and she will be a great addition to our Leadership Team. We are confident that she will make a positive contribution to the lives of residents, staff and families.
We thank our PSW nursing students: April T, Daniel L, Emily F, Shaunna W-D, Jennifer C and Olivia H for providing wonderful care to our residents during the summer months. They are going back to university in the fall. We welcome new PSW recruits: Arianna M, Liam M, Anjali P, Navdeep K.
Director of Nursing Karla- Ministry of Long-Term care inspectors arrived in our home the week starting on Mon. Aug. 28th for an inspection. We will post our inspection report once received. Our direct care staff have been receiving a refresher on our skin and wound program. Staff enjoy our educational initiatives! September is medication month, and the Home will be completing a comprehensive review of our Medication Management policies with the support of Silver Fox Pharmacy as we continually strive for excellence and high quality of care.
Assistant Director of Nursing Infection, Prevention and Control (IPAC) Lead MaryAnn- You can expect a call from me for consents for: the influenza vaccine and if needed for an outbreak Tamiflu. The influenza vaccine will be administered when available likely early October. Because many residents received the spring 2023 COVID booster as recommended by Public Health, we will administer the fall 2023 COVID booster during November-December to ensure the recommended close to 6 months time frame has elapsed. She asks that to please take special care with hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. If you are uncertain about your health status, masks are available to wear to reduce the risk of transmission. Remember that respiratory viruses can be transmitted 1-2 days before symptoms develop.
Business Manager Kathy- There is nothing to report on the business front but my commitment to the occupational health and safety committee as well as palliative care committee continues.
Food Service and Nutrition Manager Christine- A public health inspection in the dietary kitchen took place in August with no findings. Since the weather is unpredictable, we have decided to serve corn on the cob sides a few more times on nice weather days. Look to the activity calendar for pop up dates.
Maintenance Manager Reg- The mandatory total evacuation went very smoothly on August 11th. I have submitted a report with details as to the time frames that it took to evacuate each area. Well done!
Resident Care Plan Co-ordinator Leanne- The main goal in the home is for all residents to achieve through collaborative efforts a maximal level of well being, safety, socialization, and functioning. Alternately the home engages in a palliative philosophy of care. Auditing continues to ensure best outcomes.
Activation Manger Carol- Thank you to all the residents, staff, family and friends that participated in the Elvis night and car show! Blankets and the sheer energy of people dancing and enjoying themselves kept everyone happy, comfortable and warm as did the hot chocolate.
We are happy to have a new St. John Ambulance volunteer Megan join us in September with her dog Juniper. FYI Juniper’s breed is a Great Pyrenees Mix.
Resident Council Week kicks off September 11. Last year we appeared in the Resident Council Season’s Magazine which brought our team members much joy. We thank our resident council for all their work and congratulate them for making our Home shine!
Happy Labour Day, Happy Grandparent’s Day, Hapy Resident Council Week,
Welcome Fall September 22nd
